DevOps vs. SRE vs. Platform Engineer: What's the Difference?
These titles overlap heavily and companies use them differently, but there are real differences in emphasis.
DevOps engineer
Focuses on getting code from commit to production reliably: CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, containers and monitoring. Often the broadest of the three.
Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)
Focuses on reliability as an engineering problem: service level objectives, error budgets, incident response, capacity planning and automation to remove toil. More software engineering and on-call.
Platform engineer
Builds the internal platform other developers use: standard deployment paths, self-service environments and tooling. Treats developers as customers.
Which should you aim for?
Start with the shared foundation: Linux, networking, a cloud (AWS), Git, CI/CD, Docker and Terraform. Then lean toward SRE if you enjoy debugging and reliability, or platform engineering if you enjoy building tools for other engineers.
