Terraform vs. CloudFormation: Which Infrastructure as Code Tool Should You Learn?

18 October 20265 min read

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) means you create servers, networks and databases from files instead of clicking in a console. Terraform and AWS CloudFormation are the two names you will see most.

CloudFormation

CloudFormation is AWS's own service. It is deeply integrated with AWS, needs no extra tooling, and tracks state for you. It only works with AWS, and templates in YAML or JSON can get verbose.

Terraform

Terraform uses the HCL language and works across AWS, Azure, GCP and many other providers. It has a large module ecosystem and a clear plan-and-apply workflow, but you manage the state file yourself, usually in S3 with locking.

Which should you learn first?

For most job seekers, learn Terraform first because it appears in more job descriptions and transfers between clouds. Learn enough CloudFormation to read it, since many AWS-only teams use it, and the AWS DevOps Professional exam (DOP-C02) tests it.
