AWS SAA-C03 vs. DOP-C02: Which Certification Should You Take Next?

"Should I get SAA or DOP next?" is one of the most common questions we get, usually from people who already have Cloud Practitioner or a bit of hands-on AWS experience. The honest answer depends less on which exam is "better" and more on which job you're actually trying to land — the two certifications test genuinely different skills.

What SAA-C03 actually tests

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is about design. Given a set of requirements — cost, availability, performance, security — can you pick the right combination of services and wire them together correctly? It's broad: compute, storage, networking, databases, and security all show up, but rarely in deep operational detail. It's the exam equivalent of being handed a whiteboard and asked "how would you build this?"

What DOP-C02 actually tests

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional assumes you already know SAA-level architecture and goes deep on how you actually operate that architecture at scale: CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring and incident response, and automating recovery when things break. It's noticeably harder — the scenario questions are longer, and there's often no single "correct" answer, just a "least bad" one under the stated constraints.

The practical difference in job postings

• Roles titled "Cloud Engineer," "Solutions Architect," or "Infrastructure Engineer" lean on SAA-level knowledge.
• Roles titled "DevOps Engineer," "Platform Engineer," or "SRE" expect DOP-level operational depth — pipelines, automation, and production ownership.
• Many job postings ask for "AWS certification" without specifying which — in practice, SAA is treated as the baseline and DOP as the differentiator.

So which one should you take next?

If you don't have SAA-C03 yet, get that first regardless of your target role — DOP-C02 explicitly assumes SAA-level architectural knowledge, and skipping ahead usually means failing DOP and having to re-study the fundamentals anyway. If you already hold SAA-C03 and you're aiming for a DevOps, platform, or SRE role, DOP-C02 is the clear next step. If you're aiming to stay in pure architecture or infrastructure design, Solutions Architect – Professional is a more natural follow-up than DOP.
