AWS DOP-C02 Study Plan: How to Prepare in 10 Weeks
A realistic prep window for AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) is 8–10 weeks if you already hold Solutions Architect – Associate (or equivalent hands-on experience) and can study 8–10 hours a week. Add 3–4 more weeks if you're starting without that foundation — DOP-C02 assumes it and won't re-teach it.
Exam format, in brief
As commonly listed by AWS and major training providers: 75 questions (multiple choice and multiple response) in 180 minutes, scored 100–1000 with 750 needed to pass, delivered via Pearson VUE (in person or online proctored), valid for three years. Fees and policies can change, so confirm the current price and retake rules on AWS's own certification page before you register.
Weeks 1–2: SDLC automation and CI/CD
- CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy and CodeArtifact, and how they chain together end to end.
- Deployment strategies: in-place vs. blue/green vs. canary vs. linear, and when each one limits blast radius.
- Build a small pipeline yourself: a Git push that builds, tests and deploys a sample app to two environments.
Weeks 3–4: Infrastructure as code and configuration management
- CloudFormation: stacks, change sets, nested stacks, drift detection and StackSets for multi-account deployments.
- Where CDK fits versus raw CloudFormation, at a conceptual level — DOP-C02 tests judgment, not syntax.
- Systems Manager for patching, Parameter Store and Run Command, plus OpsWorks and Elastic Beanstalk at a high level.
Weeks 5–6: Monitoring, logging and event-driven remediation
- CloudWatch metrics, alarms, composite alarms, Logs Insights queries, and custom metrics via the embedded metric format.
- X-Ray for tracing across distributed services, and CloudTrail for auditing API activity.
- EventBridge rules that trigger Lambda for auto-remediation — this pattern shows up repeatedly on the exam.
Weeks 7–8: High availability, resilience and disaster recovery
- Auto Scaling policies (target tracking, step, predictive) and how they interact with ELB health checks.
- Multi-AZ vs. multi-Region architectures, and DR strategies: backup & restore, pilot light, warm standby, multi-site.
- Route 53 health checks and failover routing, and backup automation with AWS Backup.
Weeks 9–10: Security, governance and practice exams
- IAM policies and roles for pipelines (least privilege for CodeBuild/CodeDeploy service roles is a recurring theme).
- AWS Config rules and conformance packs for continuous compliance; KMS for encrypting pipeline artifacts and logs.
- Two or three full-length timed practice exams, reviewing every wrong answer against the official exam guide.
Where people lose time on this exam
DOP-C02 questions are long scenarios with two or three plausible answers, and the exam is checking which one best fits stated constraints like cost, blast radius or minimal downtime — not which one is technically possible. Candidates who only watched videos tend to recognise every service mentioned but still pick the wrong answer, because they haven't built a pipeline that actually failed a deployment and had to roll back. Spend at least half your study time in the console or CLI, not slides.
Our AWS Solutions Architect + DevOps Engineering Master Program sequences SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 together, with a hands-on lab attached to nearly every CI/CD and IaC module so this plan isn't just reading — it's building.
